EC to re-exhibit corrected voter roll online
The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced plans to re-exhibit the corrected Provisional Voters Register (PVR) online, citing logistical constraints as the reason a nationwide physical exhibition is not feasible ahead of the 2024 General Elections.
This decision follows demands from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which recently staged a nationwide protest, ‘Enough is Enough,’ calling for corrections to the PVR and a forensic audit of the Commission's IT systems.
Acknowledging the NDC’s concerns, the EC explained that physically exhibiting the register at over 40,000 centres would take approximately four weeks, a timeline incompatible with the upcoming elections.
In response, the Commission decided to implement an online option, allowing voters to verify their details and report discrepancies digitally.
“The Commission intends to implement an online exhibition of the PVR at no cost to registered voters. Voters will be able to report on anomalies with their details within a time frame to be made available to the public. The Voters Register will be displayed online until Election Day,” the EC stated.
The NDC also demanded a forensic audit of the EC’s IT system, alleging issues such as illegal voter transfers, deleted names, and incomplete data.
However, the EC refuted the necessity for an audit at this stage, emphasising that the legal and administrative procedures in place to clean the register have not yet been fully utilised.
“…the Commission is of the view that the legal and administrative processes laid down to clean the PVR have not been fully exhausted to justify the calls for a forensic audit. We entreat the public to trust us to carry out our mandate,” the statement continued.
