The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has issued a stern warning to the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Ghana Police Service regarding alleged illegal re-collation of election results in collaboration with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Speaking at a press briefing at the NDC headquarters, Mr. Asiedu Nketia cautioned that any unlawful actions would have repercussions in the future.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to the electoral processes enshrined in Ghana’s Constitution and those established through the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

According to the NDC Chairman, no single political party or institution, including the EC, should have the exclusive authority to collate election results, as this could lead to potential fraud.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia expressed disbelief over reports that one political party had tallied results while others did not have access to pink sheets, describing the situation as a threat to Ghana's democracy.

He clarified that, under the Constitution, the EC Chairperson is responsible for declaring presidential election results, while EC representatives in constituencies declare and swear in parliamentary candidates-elect.

Addressing reports of NPP-led re-collation activities at the Tesano Police Depot, Mr. Asiedu Nketia revealed that he had earlier warned NDC supporters not to participate in any such activities, as no mutual discussion or legal basis existed for them.

He accused the police of facilitating illegal re-collation efforts, which he claimed were outside their mandate.

“The police are protecting the NPP to conduct illegal re-collation of results.

This is not their job, and it undermines the democratic process,” he stated.

The NDC Chairman also called on traditional leaders to refrain from interfering in electoral matters, reminding them that the Constitution prohibits chiefs from engaging in active politics.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia took aim at the outgoing Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of trying to lecture the NDC on democracy while exhibiting "a replica of impunity."

“Anybody using the arms of government to perpetrate any illegality will face the consequences when the NDC assumes power on January 7, 2025,” he concluded, reaffirming the party's commitment to holding accountable those who undermine Ghana's democratic processes
