DRIP: Nobody should lie, equipment funded by my c'ttee; no parliamentary involvement – Bawumia
Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed claims by some National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs) that they were instrumental in the procurement of equipment for the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP).
The DRIP, which has provided excavators and other earthmoving machinery to improve road infrastructure across Ghana, has been credited by some NDC MPs as being funded through their portion of the District Assemblies Common Fund.
Addressing attendees at the Awubia Festival in Awutu Bereku, Awutu Senya West, in the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia vehemently rejected these claims.
“It has nothing to do with Parliament. We came up with the idea, we funded that. It didn’t go to Parliament for any approval,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia elaborated that the initiative was developed by a committee he led.
“On that committee which I chaired, the critical roads committee, I came up with the idea that we should buy equipment to help every district construct roads in Ghana.
“We were to buy all districts excavators, rollers, graders, backhoes, tipper trucks and so on. This was an idea from my committee,” he explained.
The NPP flagbearer stressed that the project was fully funded and executed by his committee without any involvement from Parliament.
“So nobody should come and lie about it,” Dr. Bawumia added.
