Appointments Committee chaos: Speaker Bagbin lifts suspension of 4 MPs
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S. K. Bagbin, has lifted the suspension order placed on four Members of Parliament (MPs) connected to the January 30, 2025, chaos witnessed during the ongoing ministerial vetting.
MPs Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (South Dayi), Jerry Ahmed Shaib (Weija-Gbawe), and Alhassan Tampuli (Gushiegu), were affected.
Speaker Bagbin originally suspended the MPs for two weeks, finding their actions disorderly and dishonorable.
However, the Minority in Parliament led by Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin protested the decision, arguing that the Speaker was overstepping his powers. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) also accused the Speaker of being “selective” and “autocratic” in his punitive decisions.
Some civil society organisations (CSOs) also called on the Speaker to review his decision.
On the floor of Parliament, Tuesday, February 4, after hearing both sides of the House, Speaker Bagbin lifted the suspension order, making an official announcement of his decision.
The formerly suspended MPs have resumed their parliamentary duties and respective roles on Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
