President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has raised concerns over the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama's ability to lead Ghana, warning that his return to power could undermine major policies, particularly the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

Speaking to the chiefs and people of the North-East Region on Tuesday, 15 October 2024, President Akufo-Addo cautioned that Mahama's election in the upcoming December 7 polls could jeopardise the future of the Free SHS initiative, which has provided free secondary education to thousands of students across the country.

Akufo-Addo pointed to Mr. Mahama’s recent comments as evidence that the NDC leader might scrap the policy if given another term. He called on Mr.

Mahama to clarify his stance on the matter, stating, "Let’s ask him [Mahama], which is which? What should the Ghanaian people take as your real position? Because this chopping and changing, chopping and changing, is a very difficult thing for some of us to understand."

The president expressed doubts about Mr. Mahama’s consistency, suggesting that his shifting statements on the Free SHS policy made him unreliable.

"What should we believe? Are you going to change it? Are you going to cancel it? Are you going to improve it? Because every time you open your mouth, you say a different thing," President Akufo-Addo stated.

He questioned Mr. Mahama's trustworthiness as a candidate for the presidency, saying: "I don’t think a man who talks like that, who wants the supreme office of our country, is somebody who can be trusted."
