Afenyo-Markin pushes for recall of Parliament to complete unfinished gov't business
The leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs in Parliament, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has announced plans to recall Parliament, following recent tensions over the indefinite adjournment of the House.
The Effutu MP expressed his displeasure with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn sittings indefinitely, describing it as a deliberate tactic by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to obstruct parliamentary business.
Mr Afenyo-Markin accused the 'Minority' caucus of deliberately trying to derail critical governmental functions and delay the passage of key legislation needed to stabilize Ghana's economy.
He emphasized the urgency of resuming parliamentary sessions to advance essential government work, including passing crucial bills and discussing national matters.
He expressed concern that the indefinite adjournment could stall vital economic interventions the government is working on to address the country’s current challenges.
According to him, the NDC’s actions threaten to create instability and undermine the government's efforts to ensure Ghana's economic recovery.
The Effutu MP called for unity in Parliament, warning that the NPP will not allow the opposition’s strategies to derail the government’s plans.
He reassured the public that despite the political tension, the NPP remains committed to ensuring smooth parliamentary business.
Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that recalling Parliament is necessary to ensure that the legislative body fulfils its duties and allows the government to continue implementing its economic policies.
He reiterated the NPP's resolve to counter what he described as the opposition’s disruptive tactics, affirming that the party will not be deterred by the actions of the NDC.
“God willing, Wednesday, October 23, the 'Majority' will trigger the recall of Parliament because the actions of the Speaker are undermining parliamentary work, risking economic damage. We will trigger the recall of Parliament and see what he [Bagbin] will do,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He further criticized Speaker Bagbin for not taking decisive action in line with a court order and accused him of avoiding the issue at hand, reaffirming the NPP's determination to move forward with recalling Parliament.
He made the call for a recall of Parliament while speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.
