#2024Polls: NPP survey reveals massive election loss was over governance issues – Napo

Admitting to a resounding loss in the 2024 polls, former Energy Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate Matthew Opoku Prempeh has asserted the loss “has got nothing to do with economic mismanagement” as some hold.
He explained that around the world, when a government loses an election over economic mismanagement, the electorate typically goes out “in droves to vote for the other party”.
This was not what happened per the results of the December 7, 2024, elections, he argued.
“Voter apathy affected both parties but affected NPP even the more,” he observed.
He revealed the NPP had conducted a survey and discovered they lost the election over “governance issues,” rather.
“When people in your party are fed up with the way you are governing. They decide not to go flocking to the opposition, but they don’t even want to turn up to vote,” he explained.
Dr Opoku Prempeh, often called Napo, pointed out worrying instances where NPP supporters refused to vote even when they were at polling stations, and despite passionate appeals by members of parliament (MPs).
“It’s never happened in this country [before],” he remarked.
“That’s not about economic mismanagement,” he emphasised, adding: “That’s about a deep-seated problem the party hasn’t addressed and that’s the governance issue.”
He indicated though the NPP government observed this worrying trend, it could not timeously do much to remedy it.
He conceded defeat, and apologised to “our supporters and Ghanaians,” recognising the need to “sit down and do our homework well and come back”.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh spoke to Umaru Sanda of Channel One TV at Parliament.
