#2024Polls: NDC didn't win, we gave it to them – Bawumia to NPP supporters
The failed Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the party's loss in the just-ended presidential election to a decline in their voter turnout rather than an outright victory by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking to party executives and supporters from the Korle Klottey Constituency at his residence, Dr. Bawumia observed a significant drop in the NPP's vote tally compared to the NDC’s consistent performance.
“I want to encourage you all to see that we handed this election over to the NDC.
They didn’t win this outright. Their numbers didn’t change from 2020. Ours have dropped by 40%, so the analysis is simple,” he stated.
Acknowledging the pain and disappointment among supporters, Dr. Bawumia urged unity and introspection within the party.
He emphasized the importance of addressing internal challenges to rebuild a competitive NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.
“This is the time for soul-searching and tolerance of one another’s views within the party.
Since this defeat is self-inflicted, it falls on us to unite and forge ahead,” he added.
According to the Electoral Commission's results, with 267 constituencies tallied, the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast.
Dr. Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes.
This marked a significant drop for the NPP, which had polled about 6.7 million votes in the 2020 presidential election under President Nana Akufo-Addo, while the NDC’s John Mahama received a little over 6.2 million votes that year. Dr. Bawumia noted that his party had lost over 2 million votes in just four years.
On Sunday morning, Dr. Bawumia called President-elect John Mahama to congratulate him on his decisive victory and pledged his support for his leadership as he prepares to return to Jubilee House.
