2024 peace accord: NDC’s unwillingness to sign will impact elections – Security expert

A security expert has raised concerns that the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) refusal to sign the December 7 general elections peace pact could have significant implications for the upcoming elections.
Mr. Anthony Acquaye explained that the signing of such peace accords by political parties plays a crucial role in calming tensions before, during, and after elections.
He expressed concern that the NDC’s decision to abstain from the peace pact might negatively affect the election's outcome.
Mr. Acquaye urged the National Peace Council to engage with the NDC and bring them to the dialogue table.
He emphasized that the NDC’s stance against signing the peace accord could disrupt the country's peace ahead of and during the elections.
He also criticised the National Peace Council for not being proactive in seeking justice for the eight individuals who lost their lives due to heavy-handed security measures during the 2020 general elections.
Mr. Acquaye made these remarks while reacting to the NDC’s decision during an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s 6:00 am news on Monday, August 19, 2024.
The NDC national chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the party might refrain from signing the peace pact this year, stating, "Signing a peace declaration doesn’t mean anything to the party, as previous pacts have not yielded any real results."
