Yellow Fever: Death toll now 32
Three more persons have succumbed to the yellow fever virus, bringing the total number of deaths in the Savanna Region to 32.
This was disclosed by the Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Chrysantus Kubio on Thursday, 25 November 2021 at a press conference held in Damango, the regional capital.
According to him, the region has so far recorded 184 suspected cases with each of the seven districts reporting cases.
Dr Kubio stated: “We have a total of 184 suspected cases and the death toll now is 32, West Gonja Municipal, 13; North Gonja District, 8; Bole District, 3; Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, 3; Central Gonja District, 3; North East Gonja District, 1; and East Gonja Municipal, 1.”
He, however, disclosed that the GHS is vaccinating unvaccinated persons in the region.
“The response is not the same; we are looking at communities that have reported cases and vaccinated successful people against the disease”, he said.
“We are checking on their immunisation status and vaccinating all people who have not been vaccinated…,” Dr Kubio noted.
The GHS on Friday, 29 October 2021, notified the public of the outbreak of yellow fever in some parts of the Savanna Region.
According to the GHS, a team was set up to investigate the outbreak of the disease and “implement appropriate control measures.”
It disclosed that following the findings of the team, it has taken immediate action including the “strengthening of the management of severe and critical cases.”
The GHS also noted that it dispatched “50,300 doses of yellow fever vaccines” for onward distribution to the selected districts for vaccination.
It further noted: “Over 43,615 persons have been vaccinated in the Savannah Region as part of this intervention,” as of Monday, 15 November 2021.
