Xavier-Sosu-Police saga: Crude means of arrest undemocratic – Fuseini
The former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Constituency has berated the police administration for the continuous use of crude means of arresting innocent citizens in the country.
According to the former MP, the use of these crude means of the arrest of innocent citizens in the country is undemocratic.
Alhaji Inussah Fuseini said this in reaction to the attempt by the Police to arrest the sitting Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Francis Xavier-Sosu at a church in his Constituency over the weekend.
Speaking in on ‘Ghana Yensom’ morning show with Kwame Appiah Kubi on Accra 100. 5 FM today Monday, November 1, 2021, Alhaji Fuseini stressed that the use of crude means of the arrest of innocent citizens is undemocratic and the police must be told in the face.
He said it is about time the leadership of the police service is told that the use of these undemocratic means of arrest in the face of the country’s democratic dispensation is wrong.
“We’re in a democratic dispensation and the police must be guided by these principles of democracy,” he said.
He noted that the police must know that there is an authority above the MP and the police itself.
The former Minister for Roads and Highways questioned why the police failed to inform the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin over their decision to arrest the Madina MP for his involvement in the said demonstration that led to the burning of tyres in Ayi Mensah
“Article 177 of 1992 grants MPs partial immunity,” he reminded the police administration.
“In Ghana everybody is responsible for his or her actions so, the question for the police administration to answer is that was the MP part of the people who burnt the tyres on the road during the demonstration?” he quizzed.
‘If the people burnt tyres and did all manner of unauthorized activities, should the MP be held responsible?” he added.
