Take firm action against threats to our country's stability, harmony – Akufo-Addo to Security Services
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghana’s security forces to adopt a resolute approach to any acts of violence threatening the nation’s peace and stability following the 2024 general elections.
In his final Christmas message delivered on Tuesday, 24 December 2024, the President emphasised the need to uphold democratic principles and prioritise national harmony over political ambition.
He noted that the pursuit of political power must always be rooted in service to the people, not in intimidation or violence.
“Let us never forget, seeking power is not a call to arms, but rather a call to serve. To those who might contemplate using violence to achieve their aims, know this: Our nation's peace is sacred, and it will not be sacrificed on the altar of ambition. The Rule of Law will prevail no matter what,” President Akufo-Addo asserted.
His remarks come amidst reports of post-election unrest, including acts of vandalism targeting public property and Electoral Commission offices in certain areas.
Condemning these incidents, the President expressed concern over their impact on Ghana’s democratic reputation and urged security agencies to act decisively to maintain stability and order.
“I urge the security services to take a firm stance against any actions that threaten the stability and harmony of our land,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo also highlighted the importance of peaceful conflict resolution as a hallmark of true democracy, urging all Ghanaians to embrace this principle.
“Let us ensure that every election deepens our democracy and fortifies our unity. As the saying goes, peace is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means. Let us embrace this wisdom as a guiding principle in our journey forward,” he added.
