Remove age restrictions for political office contests – NYA to Speaker
The National Youth Authority (NYA) is pushing for the elimination of age restrictions for certain political offices within Ghana's Constitution.
The call was made during a courtesy visit to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
During the meeting, the NYA's management formally updated the Speaker on various programs and activities planned to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Youth and Sports Authority.
CEO of the NYA, Pius Enam Hadzide, highlighted several initiatives, including the "Mindset Change and National Reorientation Campaign" and the "Not Too Young to Run Campaign." These programs aim to inspire and groom young individuals to assume leadership roles. However, age restrictions in some political offices, such as Assemblyman, Member of Parliament, and the Presidency, currently act as barriers to youth development, motivating the NYA's call for their removal.
Speaker Bagbin expressed confidence in the potential of the youth and welcomed the NYA's proposal. He emphasised the necessity of empowering young individuals to take up leadership positions. Additionally, the Speaker raised concerns about a declining sense of patriotism among the youth in the country.
The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, and the MP for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, commended the NYA for its various initiatives.
The NYA's proposal to remove age restrictions for certain political offices comes as a crucial step towards encouraging youth participation in governance and fostering a more inclusive political landscape.
