Public outrage as Karen Baaba Sam shares domestic abuse ordeal
A wave of public reactions has followed the harrowing domestic abuse revelations of Ms. Karen Baaba Sam, who has accused her former partner, Nana Kwadwo Adjei, a well-known Ghanaian businessman, of subjecting her to years of physical, emotional, and verbal abuse.
In an interview, Baaba Sam recounted the traumatic experiences she endured while cohabiting with Nana Adjei from 2016 to 2020.
She eventually moved out due to the severity of the abuse, yet her ordeal has sparked widespread concern, with many Ghanaians taking to social media to express their solidarity and share similar experiences.
Many social media users have praised Baaba Sam’s bravery in coming forward, while others have criticized the authorities for their handling of her case.
Ayinipobila Azas, in a Facebook post, commended Karen for breaking the silence on domestic violence.
“It takes incredible strength to speak openly about something so personal and painful, especially when society often fails to support survivors,” she wrote.
Azas also shared her own survival story, recalling how she endured severe physical abuse in 2020, leaving her in fear for her life.
Renowned media personality Bridget Otoo also weighed in on the matter via X (formerly Twitter), condemning those who question why Karen stayed in the abusive relationship for so long.
“She lived with someone who bragged about his influence over the police!
Several reports were also made to the East Legon Police, and no action was taken!” Otoo wrote.
Actor and activist Lydia Forson described Baaba Sam’s experience as “a chilling read,” while another social media user, Camry Tagoe, expressed outrage, calling for harsher punishments for abusers.
Amid the ongoing public discourse, a warrant for Karen Baaba Sam’s arrest has surfaced, issued by the Achimota District Court on January 20, 2025.
The warrant, signed by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, cites her for unlawful child removal and describes her physical features, including a tattoo on her right breast.
However, the move has been met with skepticism, with many questioning the police's priorities.
Lawyer Seth Doe Esq., in a post on X, hinted at possible external influence, suggesting that the detailed physical description of Baaba Sam was unusual for a standard "wanted person" notice.
Another user, @Aku_Addy, expressed frustration at the justice system, saying, “Look at how much he beat that lady and how frequently.
Yet, he boldly went to the police and got them to declare her wanted.”
Karen’s account traces her abuse to 2016, when she met Nana Kwadwo Adjei.
The relationship, which initially seemed loving, soon turned violent.
By 2018, when she became pregnant, the abuse escalated.
She recalled the first violent attack in December 2018, when Nana Adjei, intoxicated after a night out, slapped and kicked her, including her pregnant belly.
Despite repeated physical assaults, reports made to the East Legon Police Station were allegedly ignored due to Nana Adjei’s influence over law enforcement.
Her breaking point came in April 2023, when an argument at a restaurant led to another violent incident at home.
Even their young daughter, Ohemaa, was not spared, as Nana Adjei allegedly kicked the child during a confrontation.
Determined to escape the abuse, Karen ended the relationship in December 2023.
However, this triggered threats from Nana Adjei, who demanded the return of gifts he had given her, including their daughter’s school car.
By February 2024, she moved into a new apartment, but on her first night, she was robbed at gunpoint.
Strangely, the only item not taken was a necklace that Nana Adjei had repeatedly asked her to return.
This led authorities to suspect that someone close to her had orchestrated the attack, prompting them to assign her police protection.
Calls for JusticeAs Karen’s story gains national attention, many Ghanaians are calling for an impartial investigation into both her allegations of abuse and the police’s handling of her case.
Advocacy groups are also urging authorities to prioritize survivor protection over potential legal manoeuvres that could further victimize Baaba Sam.
