Protozoa urges shift from bitumen to concrete roads

The Parliamentary Candidate for the Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, running on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket, Mr. Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, has called on Ghanaian engineers to reconsider the use of bitumen for road construction in favour of concrete or pavement blocks.

Mr. Bekoe argued that bitumen roads have repeatedly proven to be unsuitable for the country’s climate.

He noted that due to Ghana's hot weather conditions, bitumen roads often deteriorate quickly, melting and breaking down within a few years.

"Bitumen roads do not stand the test of time under our weather patterns," he emphasized.

He further stated that while bitumen roads may be effective in Western countries with colder climates, they are not ideal for Ghana, where the heat causes rapid degradation.

He attributed the frequent damage of many of the country’s roads to this mismatch, despite the government's efforts to improve infrastructure.

Speaking in an interview at the Jubilee House in Accra, Mr. Bekoe urged the country's engineers to find alternatives that could assure the longevity of roads in Ghana.

He advocated for constructing concrete or pavement roads, which he believed would be more durable and withstand the country's climate.

Mr. Bekoe pointed out that several roads in the Suhum Constituency that were recently reconstructed using bitumen have already deteriorated.

"The lifespan of many of these roads would have been extended if they had been built with concrete," he said.

He also highlighted Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent promise to construct more concrete roads as part of his initiatives for Ghana’s development.

Mr. Bekoe called on engineers to propose designs that prioritize concrete or pavement blocks considering the country’s unique weather conditions, ensuring that future road projects are sustainable and long-lasting.
