The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take swift and decisive action to restore law and order following the 2024 general elections.

The GJA expressed deep concern over reports of widespread attacks on state institutions, allegedly carried out by individuals believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The association condemned the acts of vandalism and disturbances that have occurred at key government offices and installations, contributing to growing instability across various regions of the country.

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, speaking to the media on Tuesday, 10 December, urged President Akufo-Addo to take immediate steps to safeguard national stability and uphold the peace for which Ghana is renowned.

“We are calling on the President of the Land, who is still President until 7 January and is the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to ensure that there is law and order and that Ghana remains as peaceful as it was before and during the elections,” Mr. Dwumfour said.

He added: “I know it is his constitutional mandate to do that, and as long as he remains in office, we call on him to ensure that the security forces rise to the task and calm the tensions of Ghanaians.”

The GJA also called on political leaders, civil society organisations, and all relevant stakeholders to join efforts in de-escalating tensions and promoting peace.

The association stressed the importance of respecting democratic processes and maintaining order to preserve Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.

“We must remember that maintaining order and respecting democratic processes are vital to preserving Ghana’s status as a peaceful and stable nation,” the GJA added in its statement.
