Police probe alleged political bias by Nima commander after viral video
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has begun an investigation into allegations of political partisanship involving ASP Asong Ayrakwa, the Nima District Police Commander, following the circulation of a video suggesting possible endorsement of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In the viral footage, ASP Ayrakwa is reportedly heard saying, “We will win,” a phrase that some have interpreted as an expression of support for the NDC, sparking concerns about his neutrality.
The inquiry was prompted after a meeting with representatives from the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ayawaso East and North constituencies, where both parties encouraged the police to handle the issue with caution to ensure a fair outcome.
In defence of ASP Ayrakwa, Ayawaso East NDC Constituency Chairman Mohammed Ramne argued that the video had been manipulated to misrepresent the commander’s words.
“This district commander has been working so hard to make sure there is peace in Nima. For somebody somewhere to doctor a video saying that the district commander is saying that NDC will win, in fact, God will punish the person,” Mr. Ramne asserted.
Adding a note of balance, a representative from the NPP advised restraint and suggested that ASP Ayrakwa’s statement had been misinterpreted.
“The comment ‘we will win’ doesn’t mean NDC will win or NPP will win. Peace will win; we should use our wisdom,” the NPP representative remarked.
DCOP Arhin Kwasi Annor, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, affirmed that the police would conduct an independent investigation to determine the full context and authenticity of the video.
“You are saying that he was talking about peace and that peace should win. That is your side. We are also going to conduct our own investigations,” DCOP Annor noted.
