NSS personnel declare nationwide strike over unpaid allawa

The Concerned National Service Scheme (NSS) Personnel Association of Ghana (CONSPAG) has initiated a nationwide strike beginning today, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, in response to unpaid allowances.
In a statement issued on July 2, 2024, and addressed to all NSS personnel, user agencies, and stakeholders, CONSPAG detailed the pressing challenges prompting this decisive action.
The association highlighted the severe financial strain caused by the inability to pay for accommodation, utility bills, transportation, and basic sustenance, which has forced many personnel to borrow money to survive.
"The government currently owes trainees five months’ allowance and university graduates three months’ allowance," the statement disclosed, emphasising the critical financial burden on the personnel.
The association further noted the negative health impacts resulting from these financial hardships.
"The development of health complications as a result of these hardships cannot be ignored," the association stressed.
Citing NSS rules, the association explained that personnel who fail to report to their posts for three months after posting are subject to sanctions.
Despite this, CONSPAG highlighted: "We have been working under unfriendly conditions without allowances for five and three months, respectively."
Condemning the situation as akin to slavery, the association asserted: "Our workforce is undermined, and our service to the nation is not duly recognized."
It emphasised the pivotal role of National Service Personnel in the success of public and private institutions, asserting that their contributions cannot be overlooked.
CONSPAG urged all public and private stakeholders, including media houses, political leaders, and traditional rulers, to support the timely payment of allowances.
