The National Identification Authority (NIA) Division of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU), under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, has formally petitioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah from his role as Executive Secretary of the NIA.

In a petition dated Monday, 1 July 2024, the division, representing nearly the entire NIA staff, detailed a series of grievances against Prof. Attafuah, urging for his immediate dismissal.

The petition, signed by 920 staff members, outlined serious allegations ranging from unfair labour practices to violations of statutory laws governing public service.

“The staff and union’s decision to petition your high office for the removal of Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah is grounded on unfair labour practices contrary to the labour laws and Human Resource Manual and Policy Framework for Ghana Public Services, violations of SSNIT law, poor corporate governance structure, selective and administrative injustice in the recruitment, placement and promotion of staff and lack of innovative ideas to manage the administration of the authority,” the petition reads.

Among the concerns raised include claims of administrative injustice in staff management, which the petition argues has undermined trust within the authority.

“The staff have absolutely lost trust in his administration and can no longer work with him in confidence,” the petition states, citing ongoing infractions of labour laws and SSNIT Acts as key reasons for the call for his dismissal.

The petition emphasised that removing Prof. Attafuah from office would not only restore staff confidence but also bolster the authority's reputation. “We believe his removal from the office would restore confidence among the working staff and reignite the reputation of the authority,” it asserted.

The division’s move underscored significant internal discontent at the NIA and raises broader concerns about leadership effectiveness within the organization.
