Military, Civil Society leaders urge retrospective review to strengthen Ghana’s democracy
Military and civil society leaders have called for a retrospective review of Ghana’s democratic governance system to safeguard against potential future threats to democracy.
The call was made during a public lecture held on Monday, 1 July, 2024, at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC),
The event, organised in collaboration with the One Ghana Movement, was attended by a broad spectrum of Ghanaian leadership, including Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Parliamentarians, and Judiciary representatives.
The lecture, titled: “Reflections on the Democratic Control over the Military: A Way Forward for Sustainability”, featured a keynote address by Francis Poku, former Minister for National Security.
Mr. Poku’s address centered on the urgent need for a comprehensive review of Ghana’s democratic institutions and practices to prevent a potential breakdown of democracy beyond the 2025 elections.
“There is a growing disillusionment among the public regarding our democratic processes. We must act now to address these issues before they undermine our democratic system. A thorough retrospective review of our governance structures is essential to restore trust and ensure future stability,” Mr. Opoku stated.
Mr. Poku urged all participants to unite in their efforts to fortify democratic institutions and ensure transparent, accountable governance.
“It is imperative that we reflect on our past experiences and take decisive action to overcome the challenges we face,” he emphasised.
The lecture served as a critical component of the curriculum for the Senior Command Staff Course and Post Graduate Courses at GAFCSC. It provided a platform for key stakeholders from the Defence and Security Sectors to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the future of Ghana’s democracy.
The event concluded with a strong call to action for all stakeholders to contribute to a democratic renewal process that secures the nation’s future.
