Mahama bans gov't officials from engaging in small-scale and illegal mining

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a strict directive prohibiting all members of his government from participating in small-scale mining or engaging in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
He warned that any official found violating this directive would face severe consequences.
Addressing concerns about illegal mining and its impact on the environment, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
He tasked the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources with enforcing measures to curb illegal mining while ensuring the sustainable management of the country’s mineral wealth.
As part of these efforts, the President announced a new policy banning the issuance of mining leases in all forest reserves.
Additionally, he revealed plans to swiftly revoke any licenses granted for mining in forest reserves under the previous administration.
The move underscores the government's determination to combat illegal mining and safeguard the environment from further degradation.
