Kojo Ashong: Men and women engaged in open defecation
The lack of public sanitation facilities in Kojo Ashong has forced men, women, and children to engage in open defecation in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
Mr. Abraham Quaye, an opinion leader highlighted the issue, noting that the area, which encompasses about ten communities, lacks a single public toilet.
Speaking on the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, Mr. Quaye told co-hosts Otafrigya Kaayire Kwesi Appea-Apreku and Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman that the absence of public toilets has led residents to use open fields for defecation. He emphasized the health risks involved, particularly at night, when people face the danger of snake bites and encounters with other reptiles.
Despite repeated appeals to the Ga West Municipal Assembly for assistance, no action has been taken to address the sanitation crisis in the communities along the Kojo Ashong main road.
Mr. Quaye expressed frustration over the lack of support from the municipal authorities.
Mr Abubakari Mohammed Muree, the Assembly Member for the area, supported Mr. Quaye's claims, confirming that none of the ten communities in the electoral area have public toilet facilities.
He criticized the Assembly for failing to help and noted that he had only been in office for four months. His predecessor had already informed the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Clement Wilkinson, about the residents' plight.
Mr. Muree called for private investors to help construct sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, especially as the rainy season begins.
He concluded by expressing hope for private sector involvement, stating that while the community bridge has been repaired, they now look forward to receiving further assistance to improve sanitation infrastructure
