IGP leaked tape: You’ve not completed the job, reconvene and finalise it – Bagbin tells C’ttee

Speaker Bagbin enforced a gag order on all Members of Parliament, prohibiting them from publicly commenting on the investigation until further notice

In a decisive move, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has directed the parliamentary committee investigating the alleged plot to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to reconvene and finalise their inquiry.

This comes amid heated disagreements among committee members over the final report.

On Thursday, 4 July 2024, Speaker Bagbin issued a clear mandate: “It is very clear that the committee has not completed the job… I direct that further deliberation of this matter is suspended and the committee is called upon to go back to further consider this matter.”

Speaker Bagbin’s order follows a contentious standoff between the committee’s Chairman, Samuel Atta Akyea, and Vice Chairman, James Agalga, which has stalled the committee’s progress.

The Speaker’s directive aims to resolve these internal conflicts and ensure that a thorough examination of the allegations against IGP Dampare is completed.

In addition to this directive, Speaker Bagbin enforced a gag order on all Members of Parliament, prohibiting them from publicly commenting on the investigation until further notice.

He explained, “The ongoing dispute between the Chairman and the Vice Chairman has created an unproductive environment for the House to make an informed decision.”

Mr. Atta Akyea defended the investigation’s scope, stressing the necessity of examining all aspects of the allegations, including claims of extrajudicial killings against the IGP.

“Three of the members said the issue of investigating the extrajudicial killing is inconsequential to them; then what are we sitting there for?” he questioned, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive inquiry.

The committee’s report, submitted on Tuesday, 2 July 2024, found instances of professional misconduct among the individuals mentioned in a controversial tape—COP George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Asare, and Superintendent Gyebi.

The report recommended referring two of these individuals to the Privileges Committee for providing false testimony.
