I'm sorry – Gabby Otchere-Darko to former EC boss

Mrs Challotte Osei and Gabby Otchere-Drako

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has publicly apologized to Charlotte Osei, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, for making false statements regarding her involvement in the acquisition of state land.

On September 12, 2024, Mr Otchere-Darko took to social media to issue an apology, explaining that Mrs. Osei had contacted him privately to correct the misinformation.

He admitted that his earlier claims about Mrs Osei purchasing state land were incorrect, and clarified that her property, located near the Asaase Broadcasting building, was bought privately from an individual named Berchie in 2007.

In his apology, Mr Otchere-Darko wrote: “I’ve received a private message from Mrs. @char_osei clarifying that her land, which is close to the Asaase building, was purchased privately, like the property occupied by Asaase, from a private person, Berchie, back in 2007.

Apologies for any reference erroneously attributed to her and retraction of the same.”

The controversy began when Mrs Charlotte Osei criticized Mr Otchere-Darko for involving her in a dispute with North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding a property that houses Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited.

Mr Otchere-Darko had previously alleged that Mr Ablakwa was overlooking government-sold properties, including one opposite Asaase Radio, which he claimed was acquired by Mrs Osei after displacing a public servant.

On September 11, 2024, Mrs. Osei responded with a post on X (formerly Twitter), denying Otchere-Darko’s claims.

She firmly stated that she had never benefited from state lands, and her property was acquired through a legitimate commercial transaction in 2007, years before her appointment as EC Chair in 2015.

Mrs Osei also called on Mr Otchere-Darko to rectify the falsehoods, warning of possible legal action against him and Mr Ablakwa if the inaccuracies were not addressed.
