77 anniversary of the Christianborg crossroad shooting incident

Ghana will on Friday, February 28, 2025, commemorate the 77th anniversary of the tragic Christianborg Crossroads Shooting Incident, which played a pivotal role in the country’s struggle for independence.

On this day in 1948, three ex-servicemen—Sergeant Cornelius Adjetey, Corporal Patrick Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey—were shot and killed by British colonial forces while marching peacefully to present their grievances at the Christianborg Castle, then the seat of government.

The ex-servicemen, who had fought for the British during World War II, were demanding their unpaid war benefits when they were met with gunfire at the crossroads leading to the castle.

Their deaths sparked widespread riots and unrest across the Gold Coast, ultimately accelerating the push for independence.

This year’s commemoration will honour the sacrifices of these national heroes and recognize the contributions of all Ghanaian ex-servicemen who dedicated their lives to the country.

The event is expected to feature a wreath-laying ceremony at the Nationalism Park in Accra to be attended by government officials, military personnel, traditional leaders, and veterans.

As Ghana reflects on this historic moment, the legacy of Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Lamptey remains a symbol of courage, patriotism, and the fight for justice and freedom.
