Vice President flanged by Defence and Interior Minister

Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang led a government delegation to commemorate the 77th Anniversary of the 28th February 1948 Christianborg Crossroads Shooting at the Nationalism Park in Osu, Accra.

She was joined by Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mubarak, and other high-ranking government officials for the solemn flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony, held annually to honour the memory of Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey, three ex-servicemen who were brutally gunned down by colonial police while peacefully marching to Osu Castle to present a petition to then-Governor Sir Gerald Creasy.

The fallen heroes and their fellow ex-servicemen had fought in World War II but were given meagre gratuities despite their sacrifices.

Their petition was part of their struggle for better compensation, which had been repeatedly ignored by the colonial administration.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, flanked by the Defence Minister and Minister for the Interior, laid a wreath on behalf of the Government and the People of Ghana.

Other wreaths were laid by:

General Thomas Oppong Peprah, Chief of the Defence Staff, on behalf of the security services. Major Gen. Clayton Yaachie (Rtd.), immediate past Chairman of the Veterans Association of Ghana. Nii Kwabena Bonney V, Osu Alata Mantse. Mr. Michael Attipoe, representing the families of the three fallen heroes.

Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony were:

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service (IGP). Goosie Obuadum Tanoh, Presidential Advisor on the 24-hour economy. Bernard Mornah, Flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC).

A parade contingent comprising officers from the Ghana Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and the Veterans Association of Ghana was also in attendance, paying tribute to the memory of the fallen heroes whose sacrifice played a crucial role in Ghana’s struggle for independence.
