Galamsey: NDC to collaborate with stakeholders on eradication, promises sustainable solutions
The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled plans to engage a broad range of stakeholders in its ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, in a bid to safeguard Ghana's environment.
The party reiterated its commitment to implementing sustainable measures to end the menace if elected in the upcoming 2024 elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 15 September 2024, signed by Alhassan Suhuyini, the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, the NDC outlined its intention to work with traditional leaders, local communities, environmental organisations, and industry experts.
This collaboration is part of the party’s strategy to implement the solutions detailed in its 2024 manifesto.
The NDC stressed that tackling the galamsey crisis requires a multifaceted approach, including strengthening law enforcement, promoting responsible mining practices, and offering alternative livelihoods for those involved in illegal mining.
“We assure all concerned Ghanaians of the NDC and President Mahama’s future government commitment to engage constructively with civil society organizations and labour unions to implement comprehensive policies.
“These policies will address both the economic realities that drive illegal mining and the urgent need for environmental protection,” the statement said.
The party acknowledged the environmental damage caused by galamsey, citing water pollution, deforestation, and the destruction of farmlands as pressing issues that require immediate attention.
By involving stakeholders in the conversation, the NDC hopes to foster a sense of collective responsibility and ensure accountability in the fight against galamsey.
“We acknowledge more than ever how essential it is for all stakeholders to work together to find sustainable solutions that preserve our natural resources for future generations,” Mr. Suhuyini indicated.
The NDC also criticised the perceived lack of transparency and political interference in the current government’s handling of the illegal mining crisis.
The party vowed to promote transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies under a future NDC administration.
The NDC emphasised its dedication to preserving Ghana's environment through a collaborative, inclusive approach aimed at permanently eradicating illegal mining activities.
The party also pledged to advocate for stronger policies and community-based initiatives that address the socio-economic drivers of galamsey while ensuring sustainable environmental practices.
