The Minority in Parliament has called for President Nana Akufo-Addo to address the nation regarding the severe impact of illegal mining, or galamsey, on Ghana’s environment.

This demand comes amid growing concerns over the destruction of water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves caused by uncontrolled mining activities.

In a press statement released on Sunday, 15 September 2024, signed by Alhassan Suhuyini, Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, the Minority emphasised the need for a comprehensive address from the president.

The Minority believes that such a speech is crucial to outline government's strategies to combat the environmental crisis, which has persisted despite multiple interventions.

The statement noted: “The detrimental impacts of galamsey are widespread, affecting not just the environment but also the livelihoods of countless individuals who depend on clean water and healthy ecosystems.

“We call upon President Nana Akufo-Addo and his government to address the nation on the state of our environment, outlining immediate and decisive actions to tackle these illegal activities,” the statement urged.

The Minority expressed concern that the situation has deteriorated despite the president’s initial promise to address illegal mining.

They highlighted the involvement of high-profile individuals in these activities and stressed that the president’s address should include actionable solutions and involvement from all stakeholders.

“The damage caused by galamsey is at a critical level, threatening both the environment and the livelihoods of many communities.

“We urge the president to not only address the crisis but also propose actionable solutions that involve local communities, law enforcement, and civil society,” the statement added.

The Minority also warned of potential severe consequences, including food insecurity and health hazards from polluted water sources, if immediate measures are not taken.
