GRIDCo blames 'system disturbance' for Friday night's nationwide dumsor
The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has cited a disturbance within its system as the root cause of a nationwide power outage that unfolded on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 7 PM local time. This disruption had a widespread impact, affecting key regions including Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale, and various major cities across the country.
GRIDCo initiated restoration efforts, with an outcome of three-quarters of customers having their power supply reinstated by 8 PM.
In an official statement, GRIDCo expressed its regret for any inconvenience caused and extended gratitude to customers for their patience as they work diligently to restore power to all affected areas.
"The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo), the 'Operator' of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), has officially reported a system disturbance occurring at 19:03 GMT, affecting multiple regions across the nation," the statement read.
"Immediate restoration efforts were initiated, resulting in three-quarters of customers having their power supply reinstated by 21:00 GMT".
It said: "Ongoing endeavors to restore power align with the gradual resurgence of generation capacity. GRIDCo extends its apologies for any disruption and appreciates the understanding and patience of our valued customers during this restoration process."
Additionally, the Electricity Company of Ghana issued an apology to its customers in response to the extensive outage.
