GAF withdraws troops from GBC
In a notable development, the Ghana Armed Forces, through its 64 Infantry Regiment, has announced the withdrawal of its troops stationed at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), effective Tuesday, October 1, 2024.
The decision has sparked widespread interest, especially given its timing ahead of the country’s crucial presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.
The Ghana Armed Forces has provided security for GBC, a key institution in the dissemination of public information, for several years.
However, the reasons behind this sudden withdrawal remain unclear.
With Ghana's political environment becoming increasingly charged ahead of the upcoming elections, questions have arisen about the potential implications of the troop withdrawal on the security of GBC.
The move has also raised concerns about the safety of journalists and the corporation’s role in ensuring the free flow of information during this critical period.
Although the Armed Forces has not provided any official explanation for the decision, there is speculation about how it could affect GBC’s operations and security in the lead-up to the elections.
Stakeholders have emphasised the importance of maintaining transparency and security as political activity intensifies.
In light of the troop withdrawal, GBC staff and stakeholders are advised to remain vigilant and collaborate with the relevant authorities to ensure a smooth transition and continued security for the corporation.
