Focus on holding powerful individuals engaged in galamsey accountable – GBA President to gov't

The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw A. Boafo, has raised concerns about government's commitment to tackling illegal mining, which continues to wreak havoc on the country’s water bodies.
Speaking at the GBA’s annual conference in Kumasi, Ashanti region, on Monday, 9 September 2024, Mr Boafo highlighted the ongoing issue of illegal mining, often controlled by influential figures, and criticised the government for its insufficient progress despite President Akufo-Addo's high-profile efforts to address the problem.
Mr Boafo urged government to demonstrate greater boldness and honesty in confronting the true power brokers behind the illegal mining operations.
He emphasised the need for decisive action to prevent further environmental damage.
Criticising the ongoing political blame game, Mr Boafo condemned the recent comments by Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who had claimed the Minority in parliament was more responsible for water pollution than the governing party.
Mr Boafo described this statement as shocking, regrettable, and irresponsible.
The GBA president called on the government to focus on holding accountable the powerful individuals driving the illegal mining industry to effectively combat the crisis and safeguard Ghana's natural resources.
