Fake GWR chef: Verify info before publication – Minister to media

General News
Madam Abubakar described the incident as a national embarrassment and emphasised the essential role of the media

Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar has underscored the critical need for accurate reporting, urging journalists to meticulously verify information before publication to avert national chaos and embarrassment.

This admonition comes in the wake of a recent incident where a Ghanaian chef falsely claimed recognition by Guinness World Records, a story that was widely disseminated by major media outlets without proper verification.

Speaking in an interview with the media in Accra on Monday, 8 July 2024, Madam Abubakar described the incident as a national embarrassment and emphasised the essential role of the media in maintaining the integrity of public information.

“The media has the responsibility to verify every information before publication... it's dangerous to spread falsehood because it could lead us into chaos,” she stated.

The Minister highlighted the potential for even greater harm if such misinformation were to infiltrate the political realm, particularly regarding election-related matters, which could lead to serious conflicts or unrest.

Madam Abubakar also announced that the Ministry of Information will initiate regional town hall meetings and exhibitions across the country, starting at the end of July.

These efforts aim to inform citizens about government projects and ensure accountability.

The town hall meetings will include participation from regional and sector ministers, as well as key government appointees, who will address questions from journalists and community members about various government projects.

Discussions will cover a range of topics, including roads, health, education, water and sanitation infrastructure, and other local issues of public concern.

“The regional town hall meetings and exhibitions will help to ensure transparency and accountability regarding the government’s projects, with feedback for the government,” explained Madam Abubakar.
