Ensure peaceful demo – Civil society groups to NDC
The Civic Forum Initiative (CFI), which includes notable Civil Society Organisations such as the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), has called on the main National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Ghana Police Service to ensure that today’s demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC) is conducted peacefully and lawfully.
In a statement issued on Monday, 16 September 2024, the CFI emphasised the critical need for order during the protest, which is aimed at pressuring the EC to audit the voter register.
The CSOs stressed that maintaining peace would best serve both the NDC’s objectives and the broader public interest.
“We appeal to the NDC and all protest organisers to ensure that these demonstrations remain peaceful and lawful. The safety of all Ghanaians must be the top priority, and any actions that could incite violence or unrest must be avoided at all costs,” the statement read.
The CFI also urged the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to collaborate closely with the protest organizers to ensure the demonstration is managed effectively while safeguarding public order.
“It is essential that the right to protest is protected while safeguarding public order,” the statement continued.
It called on the “Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, operating under the direction of the Police Command, to work closely with the protest organisers to ensure that the demonstrations are peacefully managed.”
