Dumsor must stop vigil: You can’t picket at the Revolution square, 12 midnight closing time may compromise security – Police tells conveners
The Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has directed the conveners of the ‘#DumsorMustStop’ protest to move it to the Independence Square instead of its planned venue, the Rovolution Square.
This follows an engagement between both the conveners and the Ghana Police Service regarding the protest scheduled to take place on Saturday, 25 May 2024.
The #DumsorMustStop protest was initially planned to take place at the Revolution Square, with its conveners being actress Yvonne Nelson, political activist, Selorm Dramani Dzramado and Henry Osei Akoto.
However, in a letter to the protestors, signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Arhin Kwasi Annor, the Regional Command emphasised that the Jubilee House, the seat of government is directly opposite the Revolution Square, and therefore a security zone.
Thus the protest and picketing at the “Revolution Square may endanger public defence, public order, public safety, and violate the rights and freedom of other persons.”
It also emphasised that the proposed time of “12 midnight for closure may compromise security which may lead to violence, endanger public defence, public order, public safety, public health and the running of essential services.”
Hence, in the “interest of public order, public safety and he running of essential services,” the Command requested the conveners to relocate the picketing to the Independence Square.
