Domelevo urges Chief of Staff to set deadline for Ministers' asset declaration

Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo has urged the Chief of Staff to establish a clear deadline for newly appointed government officials to declare their assets and liabilities.
His call follows President John Dramani Mahama’s recent swearing-in of the first batch of state ministers, during which the president emphasized the importance of asset declaration as a commitment to transparency in public service.
Mr. Domelevo suggested a one-week timeframe for appointees to complete the process after assuming office.
“I propose that the Chief of Staff announce that, a week after your swearing-in, you must declare your assets and liabilities.
You should be able to find two or three hours to do this. I wish the Chief of Staff would set a deadline, not in terms of a specific day, but a period, saying that you have one week from the day you are sworn in to declare your assets,” he stated.
He explained that without a deadline, newly appointed officials often become overwhelmed with their duties, making it difficult for them to focus on asset declaration.
“After one week, by the second week, they become seriously busy,” he noted.
Beyond setting a timeframe, Mr. Domelevo also stressed the importance of making asset declarations public to promote transparency and accountability.
He commended President Mahama for urging his appointees to comply with the law and insisted that failure to declare assets should not be tolerated but sanctioned.
He spoke in an interview on Accra-based Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, January 23.
