Democracy Hub protest: 52 granted bail, lead convener Oliver Barker-Vormawor denied
Fifty-two protesters from the Democracy Hub group, who were arrested during a three-day demonstration from Saturday, 21 to Monday, 23 September 2024, have been granted bail.
However, the group’s lead convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, remains in custody after his bail request was denied again, raising concerns over the handling of his case.
On Tuesday, 8 October 2024, the Accra Circuit Court granted bail to 31 protesters, each released on a bond of GHS 20,000 with one surety.
This followed Monday’s ruling by the High Court, which granted bail to 21 others after successfully overturning an earlier remand order from the Circuit Court.
This development brings the total number of released protesters to 51 out of the 53 arrested.
Mr. Barker-Vormawor, however, continues to be held in detention. His legal team had earlier sought his release at the High Court, but opposition from the Attorney General's office led to an adjournment of his case to Wednesday, 9 October 2024.
