Dec. 7 Polls: Aligning with a political party could erode public trust, be neutral – Defence Minister to Military

Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has called on the military to maintain strict political neutrality before, during, and after the 7 December 2024 polls, underscoring their primary duty to safeguard the nation’s integrity.
Delivering an address at the Republic Day lecture hosted by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Command and Staff College on Monday, 1 July 2024, Mr. Nitiwul highlighted the crucial role of the military in preserving democracy and warned against any partisan involvement.
“The military is the last bastion of our country’s hope,” the Minister stated.
He emphasised that any alignment with a political party could erode public trust and undermine the very foundation of democracy.
The lecture featured notable speakers such as former National Security Minister Mr. Francis Poku and Prof. Kwasi Aning, who discussed the essential role of military impartiality in ensuring national security and stability.
Other distinguished guests, including Madam Josephine Nkrumah, echoed the Minister’s sentiments. They stressed the importance of the military operating independently of political influence to effectively carry out its duties.
The event marks the launch of a series of public lectures planned by the GAF Command and Staff College, aiming to spark discussions on critical national security issues in the coming months.
