Chief Justice defends request for more SC judges amid case backlog

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has robustly defended her call for additional Supreme Court judges, citing the overwhelming number of cases currently before the apex court.
Her remarks came during her closing statements after hearing two high-profile lawsuits challenging Parliament's passage of the anti-gay bill.
"The ruling is adjourned to July 17, 2024. We must thank everyone for their patience, but this is our lot. There are several cases pending, right? That is why we need more Supreme Court judges,” Chief Justice Torkornoo stated, underscoring the pressing need for more judicial appointments to handle the increasing workload.
This statement follows her formal request to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to nominate five additional judges to the Supreme Court.
The aim is to bolster the judiciary with highly qualified and experienced legal minds to manage the case backlog efficiently.
The nominated judges include: Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botchwey, who is currently presiding over the ambulance case involving Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Other nominees are Justice Afia Asare Botwe, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, Justice Eric Kyei Baffuor, and Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah.
