Black flies invade Dawhenya, prompting health concerns

Communities within the North Dawhenya Electoral Area in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana are grappling with a concerning invasion of mysterious black flies.
These pests have been leaving bloodstains on the spots where they bite humans, causing anxiety and distress among residents.
Affected locals have reported continuous scratching of their skin, resulting in painful swellings on their bodies. The areas hit by the invasion include Abbeykope, Miotso, Eagle Nest Estates, Mackweon Estates, among others.
Moses Nii-P Kutor, the Assembly member for North Dawhenya Electoral Area, raised the alarm and urgently sought assistance from the District Health Directorate and the Environmental Health Office to address the issue.
He revealed that the bites of these flies are believed to be poisonous, leading to sores and skin diseases among victims.
Expressing concern for the community's well-being, Kutor stressed the need for immediate attention to the situation, especially for children, including those attending school, who are particularly affected by the painful bites.
In response to the alarming situation, the District Health Directorate of the Ningo Prampram District confirmed the presence of these insects and assured residents that investigations were underway. Collaborating with the Environmental Health Office, they are actively devising strategies to combat the infestation, which may involve fumigation in the affected communities.
The community remains on edge as efforts are underway to contain the invasion and prevent further health complications caused by the enigmatic black flies.
