Astroturf: Dunkwa-On-Offin materials gathering dust and weeds 3 years after ground-breaking ceremony

After three years since the ground was broken for the construction of an astroturf in the Dunkwa-On-Offin area of the Upper Denkyira East Constituency in the Central Region, the facility remains neglected and overgrown with weeds.
The Chief of Dunkwa-On-Offin, Dr Okufobour Obeng Nuarko III, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the state of the project, which was intended to unearth football talents and benefit the community.
Dr Nuarko III voiced his concerns about the neglect of the project, pointing out that political leaders have failed to update the traditional leaders on its progress.
Speaking on the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, the chief expressed his frustrations over the handling of the project during the past three years.
He lamented the lack of information about the project, stating that he is unaware of the contractor responsible for the construction, despite the traditional authorities granting the land for the facility.
The chief's remarks shed light on the inadequate communication and transparency surrounding the project.
In response to the chief's claims, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Upper Denkyira East Constituency representing the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Festus Kwoffie, explained that the initial contractor was expected to finance the construction but failed to do so after delivering materials to the site.
Mr Kwoffie disclosed that the project is now being reassigned to a different contractor through the Zongo Development Fund.
However, Kwoffie did not disclose the name of the earlier contractor involved.
He, furthermore, refuted claims that the groundbreaking ceremony was conducted by Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, distancing the Vice President from the project's delays and current state.
In summary, the astroturf project in Dunkwa-On-Offin remains unfinished and neglected after three years, causing frustration for the community and its chief.
The lack of communication and transparency regarding the project's progress has raised concerns.
The MP assured that steps are being taken to repackage and reassign the project to a different contractor through the Zongo Development Fund.
