Akufo-Addo upgrades Ho, Sunyani, Wa municipalities to metropolises
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has authorised the elevation of several districts to municipalities and municipalities to metropolises, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s decentralisation agenda.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 4 December 2024, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development (MLGRD) confirmed that the executive approval follows a formal request in accordance with the provisions of Act 936.
As part of the upgrades, several municipalities have been promoted to metropolises, including the Ho Municipal Assembly, Sunyani Municipal Assembly, New Juaben Municipal Assembly, and the Wa Municipal Assembly.
In addition, the districts of Offinso North, Brim North, and Karaga have been upgraded to municipalities.
These developments are expected to bolster local governance, foster improved public service delivery, and accelerate regional growth.
This forms part of the government’s broader effort to decentralise administrative powers and promote more effective governance at the local level.
