Akufo-Addo congratulates Efua Ghartey on historic election as first female GBA president
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended heartfelt congratulations to Efua Ghartey, who made history by becoming the first female president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).
Mrs. Ghartey, a highly accomplished lawyer, was elected by her peers, breaking new ground for women in Ghana's legal profession.
In a Facebook post on, President Akufo-Addo hailed Mrs. Ghartey's achievement as a landmark victory for gender equality, describing it as a "powerful statement" that aligns with Ghana’s ongoing progress towards inclusivity. He linked her historic win to the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act, reinforcing the broader national efforts toward empowering women.
"A hearty congratulations to Mrs. Efua Ghartey and Mrs. Victoria Osei-Bonsu Barth on their remarkable victories in this year’s Ghana Bar Association elections! Mrs. Ghartey’s determination and perseverance have finally been rewarded as she becomes the first female National President of the Bar Council after three attempts," the president said.
President Akufo-Addo also expressed confidence in Mrs. Ghartey's leadership abilities, predicting that she will steer the GBA to greater heights and inspire more women to pursue leadership roles, both within the legal field and beyond.
"As a member of the Bar, I am elated to live to see this day when the Bar is led by a woman. As President of the Republic, this victory is even more significant as it coincides with the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act, making it an even more powerful statement in the journey towards gender equality," President Akufo-Addo stated.
