Akosombo dam spillage: GAF rescues hundreds in floods
In a swift response to a distress call to save lives and properties in the Volta Region following the spillage of the Akosombo Dam, the 48 Engineer Regiment has rescued hundreds of flood victims to safe havens.
The humanitarian move comes at the back of the activation of Operation BOAFO at Mepe and Aveyime to minimize the catastrophic effect the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam is having on residents within area.
The spillage, which begun on Thursday, 11 October, 2023, saw the military assist the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to rescue over thousand residents.
As part of the rescue efforts, the 48 Engineer Regiment established three crossing sites for evacuating the flood victims and housing them in tents supplied by the Ordinance Unit of the Armed Forces. Two of the evacuation sites are located at Mepe and the other at Aveyime.
The operation would continue until the water levels reduce and life returns to normalcy.
