Accra Zoo lion mauls 'intruder' to death

A lion has mauled a middle-aged man to death at the Accra Zoo within the Achimota Forest.
A statement from the Forestry Commission said the incident occurred at mid-day Sunday, 28 August 2022.
The “intruder”, according to the statement, breached the cage of a lion, lioness and their two cubs, provoking an attack from the big cats that left him with scathing injuries and subsequently, led to his death.
The statement, signed by the CEO of the Forestry Commission, Mr John Allotey, said: “Around 12:00 hours today, 28th August 2022, officials of the Accra Zoo, on a routine patrol, noticed a middle-aged man (an intruder) had jumped the security fences and entered the lions’ enclosure of the zoo”.
“The motive of the intruder is yet to be determined”, the statement noted.
“The intruder was attacked and injured by one of the lions within the inner fencing of the enclosure.”
“The intruder has been confirmed dead from injuries sustained, and the body has been conveyed to the morgue.”
The Forestry Commission statement assured the general public that “no lion has escaped from the Accra Zoo”.
