Accra: Police announce roadblocks, diversions for special operation
The Ghana Police Service has announced roadblocks and traffic diversions in key areas of Accra as part of a special operation aimed at enhancing security and managing traffic flow from today, Saturday, 21 to Tuesday 24 September 2024.
The operation will affect major routes across the city, with police urging motorists to cooperate for a smooth implementation.
According to a statement from Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the following routes will be impacted:
Traffic from the Central Business District (CBD) to Independence Avenue linking to Liberation Road will be blocked at the AU Roundabout.
Motorists from the AU Roundabout will be diverted onto Castle Road, connecting to Ridge Roundabout, Kanda Highway, and the Gold House Traffic Light at Kawukudi.
Alternatively, drivers can use Lokko Street to access Independence Avenue towards Labone.
From the AU Roundabout, traffic will turn right towards Second Avenue, passing the Police Headquarters to Dankwa Circle, through Cantonments Road to Ghana International School, and then along Second Circular Road to Giffard Road (El-Wak traffic light).
Traffic from Madina heading to Accra will be diverted at 37 Roundabout, rerouted through Obasanjo Highway to Gold House Traffic Light, then onto Dr. Liman Highway (Kanda Highway) and Ridge Roundabout towards Castle Road and Accra Central.
Traffic from 37 Roundabout will be diverted via Giffard Road (Burma Camp Road), connecting with Second Circular Road towards Cantonments Road and Dankwa Circle.
Motorists can also use Giffard Road towards Trade Fair and join Beach Road for access to the Central Business District.
The Presidential Drive (behind TV3) will be blocked at Kanda Post Office Junction, with drivers redirected to Dr. Liman Highway for alternative routes.
The road in front of Prudential Bank on Ring Road towards TV3 will also be blocked.
Additional diversions will be in place for traffic along Obasanjo Highway, Gold House Traffic Light, and Dr. Liman Highway.
Police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will be stationed at strategic locations to guide motorists.
Pedestrians are advised to avoid the stretch between AU Roundabout and 37 Roundabout during this period.
The police further assured residents near 37 Military Hospital, TV3, and those in affected areas that alternative access arrangements will be provided.
In their statement, the police expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and understanding. For further details, citizens can visit the police website or contact the provided emergency numbers.
