WAEC releases 2024 WASSCE results after funding challenges
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the provisional results for school candidates who participated in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to a statement issued by WAEC on Monday, December 30, 2024, the results of 4,108 candidates were cancelled due to examination malpractices, while 781 candidates had their results withheld for further investigations.
Details of Cancellations and Withheld Results Cancellations: The results of 483 candidates were cancelled for bringing mobile phones into the examination hall. Withheld Results: Results of 209 candidates were withheld for other suspected offences. Additionally, subject results of candidates from 319 schools were withheld over allegations of collusion.“These cases are under investigation, and the withheld results may either be released or cancelled depending on the findings,” the statement noted.
Decline in PerformanceWAEC’s analysis of the results revealed a drop in performance across three core subjects—English Language, Integrated Science, and Social Studies—compared to the previous year.
Core Mathematics, however, maintained a stable performance trend.
Allegations of MalpracticeThe examination body cited several instances of malpractice, including:
Use of foreign materials such as prepared notes, printed documents, and mobile phones in the examination hall. Collusion among candidates. Planned cheating, reportedly facilitated by some supervisors and school authorities. Accessing ResultsWAEC has made the results accessible online via its official website for candidates to check their individual performance.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the integrity of its examinations and warned of strict consequences for anyone found guilty of malpractice following ongoing investigations.
