Pres. Mahama says, scholarship beneficiaries to be published annually to control corruption, foster fairness

President John D. Mahama has said to control corruption and unfairness in the process of awarding scholarships to Ghanaian youth, his administration has decided on transparency.
He was delivering the 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA), February 27, 2025, on the floor of Parliament.
The president decried the rich and wealthy using their influence to seize scholarships, disenfranchising the genuinely needy who were the original targets of such national schemes.
He said, among other mechanisms, the public would be notified of all annual beneficiaries of scholarships, leaving the process open to scrutiny while ensuring accountability.
“The administration of scholarships is another challenge. It has been fraught with a lot of challenges. The poor who genuinely need scholarships are unable to access them because the rich and wealthy always crowd them out,” President Mahama said.
“To fulfil our government’s policy of transparency, equity and sustainability in the scholarship scheme, we shall streamline the award process to ensure that only deserving youth benefit from the system,” he added.
“We shall introduce increased transparency including publishing the list of beneficiaries every year,” he revealed.
