President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated his steadfast commitment to making education the cornerstone of Ghana’s national development.

In a speech at Valley View University, where he received his fifth honorary doctorate degree on Sunday, 14 July, 2024, the President highlighted substantial investments and transformative initiatives aimed at transitioning Ghana into a knowledge-driven economy.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo outlined the significant strides his administration has made in the education sector since taking office in 2017.

 Emphasising education as a critical component of his government’s agenda, he detailed numerous policies aimed at overhauling Ghana’s educational landscape.

“Education has been a cornerstone of my administration’s agenda,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

 Among the administration's most notable achievements is the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, launched in 2017.

This initiative has eliminated financial barriers, enabling over five million Ghanaian children to pursue secondary education.

This year alone saw a record enrollment of 503,000 students, the highest in the nation’s history.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the unprecedented budgetary allocations to the education sector, totaling GHS12.88 billion.

These funds have been used to improve infrastructure, provide essential teaching and learning materials, and support various programs that enhance educational quality at all levels.

“Our attachment to education is further reflected in the unprecedented budgetary allocations we have made to the sector,” he stated, underscoring his government’s commitment to making education a catalyst for national transformation.

The President also detailed several interventions aimed at improving education quality, including teacher training programmes, curriculum reforms, and the introduction of digital tools and resources.

These initiatives are designed to modernise the educational system and invest in the professional development of educators, laying a strong foundation for the future.

“We have launched several interventions aimed at improving the quality of education and ensuring that every child receives a holistic and well-rounded education,” the President said.

President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his dedication to making education the bedrock of national development.

He emphasised that the substantial investments and initiatives implemented by his administration are geared towards transforming Ghana into a knowledge-driven economy.

“Nothing would give me more honour or more pleasure than if, one day, Ghana’s historians were to describe me as the Education President,” President Akufo-Addo added.
