Supreme Court: Anti-gay bill judgment expected today
Judgment on two prominent lawsuits challenging the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly called the Anti-LGBTQIA+ bill, are expected from the Supreme Court today, Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
The controversial bill was passed on February 28 by Parliament.
Richard Dela Sky, a private legal practioner and broadcast journalist, and Dr Amanda Odoi, a researcher at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), have filed separate suits challenging the legality of the processes leading to the bill’s passage by Parliament, while, also, praying the apex court to determine if the bill was in congruence with constitutional and procedural standards.
Mr Sky, on March 5, contended the bill violated several provisions of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, including Articles 33(5), 12(1) and (2), 15(1), 17(1) and (2), 18(2), and 21(1)(a)(b)(d)(e), raising concerns about potential infringements on constitutionally valid fundamental human rights and freedoms of all Ghanaians.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill prohibits LGBTQIA+ activities, and promotion, advocacy, and funding of same.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has famously said he will make a decision on accenting to the bill or otherwise once the Supreme Court makes a ruling.
