The Ministry of Roads & Highways has announced the government’s intention to reintroduce road and bridge tolls.

The Kwame Agbodza-led ministry, however, noted the traditional way of collection via toll booths on roads and bridges would not be restored, in light of the convenience of technology.

According to a statement by the ministry dated Thursday, February 6, 2025, signed by Nasir Ahmad Yartey, Head, Public Relations Unit, the move is “to generate revenue for road maintenance and related matters”.

“To this end, the ministry is putting together the modalities for a modern, technologically-driven toll collection system. To achieve this objective, the ministry will employ an open, transparent, competitive, cost-effective and fair procurement process,” the statement said.

“The ministry wishes to assure the public of its commitment to introducing a modernized system that addresses the current tolling and road maintenance funding challenges of the country.”
